The government will come out with a new set of rules and regulations to tackle the growing menace of deepfake technology, IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the government will come out with new rules and regulations to control the spread of deepfake content, Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday. He chaired a meeting with social media platforms to discuss the issue of deepfakes. Deepfakes refer to digitally manipulated media altered to impersonate someone using artificial intelligence. Earlier, Mr. Vaishnaw said deepfakes have emerged as a new threat to society, adding that companies have agreed on the need for clear actionable work in areas such as detection, prevention, strengthening of reporting mechanisms, and raising user awareness. The government will also work with other countries and geographies to ensure a global collaborative effort to combat such content, Vaishnaw said. "We are synchronizing with other geographies, where we can earn from what others have done and where we can also share our experiences. There is a distinct bias in Al generative algorithms and models, so that bias also needs to be tackled," he said. This development comes after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had issued an advisory to all social media and internet intermediaries, asking them to take strict action on any deepfake content under the provisions of the IT Rules and IT Act. On this stand, Shri Santosh Shukla-Supreme Court Advocate and President of All India Information Technology Association has also appreciated the steps the government initiative in making New Act that will have 04 main rule to curb Social Media Platforms' activities and make them liable for educating as well as create awareness to netizens. He also appreciated the suggestion of Mr. Sanjeev Sanyal, Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), that the government must have a Regulatory Agency as SEBI. #AIITA
